The Val Bregaglia stretches from the summit of the Maloja Pass (1815 m) down to the Italian border near Castasegna and on to Chiavenna. The striking feature is the abrupt change in altitude:
Upper Bregaglia: Characterized by the gigantic granite walls of the Bondasca Group. Here, world-famous mountains such as Piz Badile and the Sciora Group rise majestically, attracting mountaineers from all over the world.
Lower Bregaglia: The lower you descend, the milder the climate becomes. In Castasegna, you'll find one of the largest cultivated chestnut forests in Europe. Here, plants thrive that you would more readily expect to find near Lake Como.
