The Magic of Engadin: A Getaway at the Meisser Resort in Guarda

Hotel Meisser Resort

Hotel Meisser Resort Guarda Main house

There are places that transport you into another world from the very first moment. The picturesque Schellenursli village of Guarda in the Lower Engadine is exactly such a place. Situated on a sun-drenched terrace high above the Inn River, the village fascinates visitors with its typical, beautifully decorated Engadine houses. Right in the heart of it, perfectly integrated into the historic village scenery, lies the Meisser Resort, a wonderful hotel that beautifully combines tradition, warm hospitality, and alpine charm.

Sunrise over Guarda: A magical start to the day

When you wake up at the Meisser Resort, it is definitely worth setting your alarm early. We were lucky enough to experience the village at its absolute finest: at sunrise. As the first golden rays of sun kiss the historic facades of the Engadine houses and the surrounding, majestic mountain peaks are slowly bathed in warm light, an almost magical stillness fills the air in Guarda.

Following in the Footsteps of Schellenursli and Continuing the Hike to Lai Radound

Guarda is inextricably linked to the story of “Schellenursli.” A visit to the lovingly designed Schellenursli Museum in the heart of the village is therefore almost a must, bringing childhood memories of the famous picture book back to life. We then set out directly from the village and completed part of the adventure trail. Our hike took us steadily uphill through the unspoiled nature of the Lower Engadine all the way up to Lai Radound. The deep-blue, idyllic mountain lake is nestled in an alpine setting and is the perfect spot for a break to enjoy the tranquility and the panoramic views before heading back down into the valley.

Our Conclusion

The Meisser Resort in Guarda is a wonderful retreat for anyone seeking the authentic Engadin experience without sacrificing comfort and excellent cuisine. The combination of Guarda’s historic setting, the warm hospitality of Valeria and Lukas, and the wild, romantic natural surroundings of the Lai Radound make this place a true gem in the Swiss Alps.

Practical Tips for Your Stay at the Meisser Resort

Getting There: Guarda is easily accessible via the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) (Guarda Station; from there, a PostBus runs up to the village). It is also possible to travel by car, although Guarda itself is largely car-free; however, hotel guests are permitted to drive in, and the hotel provides a spacious parking lot.

Hiking Tip: The hike to Lai Radound requires some physical stamina (sturdy shoes are recommended), but it rewards you with fantastic views.

The Resort: The hotel offers a variety of room categories in the historic main building as well as in the surrounding annexes, each with its own unique, historic Alpine charm.

A Glimpse into Childhood Memories: The Schellenursli Museum:

Visitors to Guarda can’t help but encounter one of Switzerland’s most famous children’s stories: *Schellenursli*. A lovingly designed museum in the heart of the village is dedicated to this little boy, who searches for the heaviest bell in the spring to chase away winter.

As soon as you step inside the historic Engadine house, you immediately feel transported back to the world of Ursli and his family. The museum not only displays the beautiful original illustrations by Alois Carigiet but also brings the story to life with historical artifacts, old bells, and a faithful replica of a cozy Engadine parlor. It’s a wonderfully nostalgic place that not only makes children’s eyes light up but also instantly rekindled our own childhood memories as adults.

Culinary Delights: From the breakfast buffet to a 4-course meal

The Meisser Resort is a master at pampering its guests in every way, including with its cuisine. This culinary experience runs like a common thread through the day:

  • After your morning walk, a hearty breakfast buffet awaits that has something for everyone. The wide selection of fresh, regional ingredients, delicious bread, local specialties, and homemade treats provides the perfect start to an active day in the mountains.

  • After a day spent outdoors, we were treated to a culinary delight at the hotel restaurant that evening. The exquisitely balanced four-course meal impressed us with its creative Alpine cuisine, meticulous attention to detail, and first-class service. Every course was a delight for both the palate and the eye.
